Art Club Field Trip November 20 2019

November 26, 2019

Hello Everyone,

On November 20th, the Art Club students of Green City R 1 travelled to Columbia, Missouri once more. Back in 2016/2017 (my first year) students visited a wonderful little shop called, The Mud Room. There, the students learned how to use two different types of clay to marble and form their own functional ceramic vessels. This year, my group decided to go back to that same shop. The class they took was “spinner art”; students placed a plate on a machine, the will spin it as the students poured glaze on the moving plate.  The machine causes the glaze to splatter out all over the plate. Students afterwards could use stencils and/stamps to decorate the plate further. What will be fun is how the plates turn out after being fired. As glaze heats up in the kiln, colors will naturally mix/fuse together to create a glass like coating on the outside of their vessel. What colors will their plates turn into? The rest of the visiting students and chaperones spent the nice afternoon glazing their works. Mrs. Sthole decorated Super Nintendo Controller mugs while Mr. Littrell glazed a mug for himself. Other students glazed coasters, plates, mugs, piggy banks, little figurines, etc.

The pottery will take some time to fire, so the finished pieces will be picked up approximately December 12th .

After spending the time at The Mud Room, students walked down the street to an awesome pizza place named Shakespeare’s Pizza. The restaurant is so expansive you could lose your kids in there. Students grabbed slices of pizza or picked their own pizza to share. Some even bought the souvenir cup to take home!  Happy and full, we walked to the gallery nearby, Columbia Art League. The gallery showing exhibited all sorts of talent from the area. Artwork submitted included Fiber art featuring beetles, Oil Paint on Copper featuring a gorgeous landscape, a brightly painted image of a French Bulldog, and so on. As explained, the artwork featured represented artists of all ages and abilities.

To finish our trip we needed to walk back to meet the bus. On the way there we passed a frozen yogurt shop called Yogoluv and an ice cream shop named Sparky’s. Both places were delicious! Students waddled back on the bus and took naps and/or laughed and giggled on the way back to school.

I appreciate any and all help that came with the field trip this year. This was the biggest group yet, 29 students in the club and all were able to go on the trip.

Can’t wait for next year! We are GC!
